This picture is from a social housing project (“Sopenkorpi 2049” competition) that I worked on with my friend Rilwan Kujenya.  The competition hosts were looking for new and innovative ways of planning social housing — a look, if you will, into the state of social housing by the year 2049.  Our approach was to create a modular building system by which individual dwelling spaces could be formed within a structural grid. By using modular SIPs (structural insulated panels) residents could choose how to configure their houses — along vertical or horizontal axes, or both.  Our building design also exteriorizes the building’s utilities infrastructure as a way of further standardizing the planning of individual dwellings.  This move also has the effect of minimizing the environmental impact of submerging the utilities infrastructure, and would make servicing and future expansion easier to accomplish.
